Surrender isn't just about letting go of the self imposed obligations we have weighed ourselves down with. It's also about the emotional weight we add on to the responsibilities in our lives that aren't negotiable.

We still have things that need to be done we cant just "let go".

Bills still have to be paid, we still have to go to work, laundry, groceries, dishes, and all of the other things that simply "have to be done".

But let me remind you: this course isn’t about figuring out how to be productivewith ADHD.

It’s about showing you a whole new way to look at living your life with ADHD.

And that comes with learning to take on a new perspective for how you can functionally still get done what you can't avoid.

When Not Wanting to Do Something Turns Into Self-Hate

We get stuck in a painful limbo — wanting to feel good about life, but constantly measuring ourselves against what we think we "should" be doing.

A lot of that pain comes from how we talk to ourselves about work and obligations.

We want the good life — success, stability, peace — and we even want to get our daily responsibilities done. But the dread of doing them keeps us frozen.

And here’s where it turns cruel: not wanting to do something is human — but we make it worse by believing it means we’re defective.

We think, if I hate doing this, there’s something wrong with me.

So we try to bully ourselves into motion.

Some part of us believes, “If I can just beat myself up enough — call myself lazy, worthless, a screw-up — maybe I’ll finally get moving.”

But it never works. It just deepens the hole.

You want a better life? To build something meaningful? To stop living under shame? Then we need a new way of seeing things.

What if letting go isn’t just some kind of workaround for broken people? What if it’s actually the correct way to live—for everyone?

We look at high achievers and think they’re wired differently, gifted with some supernatural focus or stamina. But maybe they just don’t have the same emotional obstacles we do.

Maybe the reason they can chase goals and hit them is because they’re not burdened by the same weight we carry.

What if "letting go" isn't just about letting go of the "task", but rather letting go of the way it makes you feel.

And maybe—just maybe—when we practice letting go, we align ourselves more closely to the mindset that high achievers live in by default.

From Emails to Existential Dread — The ADHD Pattern

Let’s make this real.Imagine I have ten emails waiting for replies. Here’s how my ADHD brain turns that simple task into an emotional avalanche:

First, my brain scans for dopamine and finds none. “Boring,” it says. Avoid.
Then it tries to save me from boredom by motivating me away from the task with negative feelings — irritation, anxiety, restlessness.
Pretty soon it’s not just “I don’t want to do emails,” it’s “I feel guilty for not wanting to.”
My guilt soon slides into self-loathing: “I’m pathetic. Normal people just do this.”
By the time I’m done spiraling, the task isn’t just unpleasant — it’s radioactive. I distract, delay, or avoid altogether, and the shame cloud grows darker.

Meanwhile, someone like my wife — who’s neurotypical — just… answers the emails.

No mental detour. No shame spiral. She doesn’t have to “let go” of anything because nothing heavy latched on in the first place.

That’s the core difference. Our brains don’t stop at “boring.” They stack pain on top of pain.

Every obligation becomes a referendum on our worth.

For me, boredom is rarely the real barrier.

It’s the guilt and shame my brain attaches the second I don’t feel like doing something. And those emotions are what make me "avoid" — not just the task itself.

This is why letting go matters.

It’s not about excusing yourself from work; it’s about dropping the emotional cargo so the work stops feeling unbearable.

This is the Shadow at full strength—that wounded child inside us kicking and screaming, shaming us for not being able to push through. But you don't yell back at a child for crying.

You kneel down.

You say: "I see you. I understand. You're allowed to feel this way."

And then… you try to do the task anyway.

Not out of guilt anymore, but just because it’s there. Like a normal brain — no longer dragging 200 pounds of emotional baggage while you're trying to do it.

That’s the power of letting go: turning the "fight" back into a simple task you can just do.

It’s Not Laziness — It’s a Wired-in Emotional Alarm

I describe the feeling of trying to do something with ADHD to neurotypicals like this, see if you agree:

Its like bungee jumping off a bridge.

You're standing at the edge, you know you're going to be okay, you know you wont die, you can see the bungee is attached and secured, but while you are looking so far down at the bottom, something in you're brain just wont let you jump.

For me that's what it feels like when I have to do a task I'm dreading. It feels like the avoidance level in my brain is at a "survival instinct" level.

I know it’s not life or death, but the dopamine gap lets a primal fear take over — and I lock up.

Letting go is how we release that grip and finally move.

We might never have the same dopamine regulation as neurotypicals, but we can learn to let go of the shame that amplifies our struggles — we can learn to lighten the emotional load.

And that changes everything.

From Stuck to Started — My Four Steps

Here’s how I talk myself through it when I’m staring down something I really don’t want to do:

Step 1: Ask the choice questionFirst, I check in with myself: “Do I actually have to do this, or can I let it go and forgive myself for skipping it?”A lot of dread comes from things that aren’t really essential — just “shoulds” I’ve guilt-tripped myself into. And if it’s not required, the healthiest move is to drop it and move on.

Step 2: Talk to your shadowBut if it is non-negotiable — bills, work, laundry — then I turn toward that little voice of dread. The one whispering, “You’re lazy. You’re irresponsible. You should be better than this.” That’s my shadow talking.And like I said before; instead of fighting it, I try to answer gently, sometimes even out loud:“I know, I get it. We don’t want to do this. I see your pain. It’s okay to feel this way. This dread isn’t truth — it’s just old memories and a brain wired differently. None of this means we’re bad.”

Step 3: Embrace, then step backOnce I’ve acknowledged it, the intensity drops a little. Once I remind myself: these feelings aren’t facts, just sensations my brain is throwing up — that creates a small gap — enough room to step outside the emotion and watch it instead of being swallowed by it.

Step 4: Start in the “numb” zoneUsually, even after all of that, I still don’t want to do the thing. But now the tug-of-war is quieter. This is where I try to go almost numb and just move. Sometimes I picture a robot: no feelings, no debate, just action. It doesn’t think about how long it will take or how much effort it’ll be — it just begins.Most of the time, that’s all I need. Once I start, momentum takes over and finishing gets easier.

You’re Learning to Let Go Everywhere Now

Think about what we’ve done so far in this module:

First, we let go of the crushing expectations of who we thought we should be.
Second, we let go of the pressure of long-term goals by replacing them with targets.
And now, we’re learning how to let go inside the “must-do” responsibilities — the unavoidable parts of life that once froze us.

Between these three, we’ve covered the full range of how to let go of the future that burdens you, and how to let go in the present that overwhelms you.

You won’t be cured of ADHD. But with these shifts, you can finally function — and function with a lighter heart.

A Life Without the Weight

Here’s what I want you to remember:

Letting go isn’t weakness. It’s not a coping mechanism for broken people.

It’s the mindset that frees you to live.

The truth is, the people you look up to aren’t carrying around the shame and dread that you are. They’re not superhuman. They’re just not dragging the same baggage.

By letting go, you get closer to that state of mind. You stop making tasks into verdicts on your worth, and start seeing them as just… tasks.

No, you won’t love laundry. You won’t suddenly enjoy paying bills. But you won’t hate yourself for not loving them.
