General Mindset: What Now?

Let’s be honest: once you finally let go of the fantasy version of your life — the one where you’ve “made it,” where you’ve checked every box and become the ideal version of yourself — you’ll probably feel like something is missing.

It’s disorienting. You’ve spent so much time trying to fix your life, so much time measuring your progress against imaginary milestones. And now… you’ve stepped off the treadmill. You’ve let go. You’re free.

But what the hell do you do now?

I remember this feeling clearly. After finally abandoning all the exhausting goals and metrics I used to gauge my worth, I felt like I had deleted the operating system I’d used for decades. For a moment, it was just silence. My whole life had revolved around strategy. If I wasn’t strategizing how to fix my life, I didn’t know what to do with myself.

That’s when I realized something huge: if I kept trying to come up with a new strategy, I’d just be doing the same thing again. So instead of trying to force a new plan, I let my mind be still.

I went to work. I did the chores. I enjoyed time with my family. And eventually, little whispers of inspiration started coming through — clean, quiet, and easy to follow.

From now on, that’s how we’re doing things.

You still have a “direction” — a target, a pull toward growth. But the way you pursue it now is with presence. With gentleness. You take action when it feels inspired, not when it feels forced.

Some days you’ll feel like doing a lot. Other days you won’t. That’s fine. You are no longer on a timeline. The only thing that matters is moving the ball forward a little bit each day, and feeling good about that.

Start With Gratitude, Not Dread

The first thoughts in your mind each morning will shape your entire day. So instead of starting your day with a running list of everything you haven’t done, start with what you have.

Take a few quiet minutes to pray or meditate about what you’re grateful for. Your home. Your family. The fact that you’re still here. But also — and this is important — the things in you that you’re grateful for.

Maybe you’re kind. Maybe you’re funny. Maybe you have good taste in music. Maybe you’re still showing up every day despite everything you’ve been through. Whatever it is, reflect on it. Start your day with abundance, not deficiency.

Set Two or Three Simple Targets

You don’t need a full to-do list. You just need a direction.

Each morning, pick two or three small things you can do that move the needle toward your current target — whether that’s building a business, cleaning up your home, or getting healthier.

Don’t think about the entire staircase. Just the next step.

And as you plan your day, imagine how good you’ll feel tonight knowing you did a little bit. That’s what we’re aiming for — not a finished goal, just the dignity of effort.

Chase the Feeling, Not the Obligation

Let your feelings guide you. I don’t mean you should follow every impulse, but if something feels light, manageable, and doable today, go with that.

You’ll be surprised how often something you dreaded yesterday feels neutral — or even exciting — after a good night’s sleep. So don’t force it. Wait for the emotional “yes.”

Notice Resistance — And Name the Ghost

Sometimes you’ll feel dread about something — like writing or cleaning — not because the task is hard, but because your brain has hardwired guilt and shame into it.

That resistance is a ghost. It’s not real. You’re not behind. You don’t have to do it. You’re not in trouble.

Just noticing the resistance without judgment can dissolve it. The act of observation breaks the spell.

If You Can’t Be Productive, Be Useful

Some days you won’t feel inspired to work on your goal. That’s fine. Instead of forcing it, look for other ways to be useful.

Help a friend. Clean something. Listen to someone who needs to vent. These little acts of usefulness can give you the same sense of value and presence — and they build momentum for tomorrow.

Eliminate & Stay on Top

Once you’ve let go of all your impossible goals, it’s time to declutter your obligations. Drop side projects that don’t matter. Get rid of lingering “shoulds.”

Then, for the essentials — housework, bills, car stuff — try to stay ahead of them. I call this “burning gas from the top of the tank.” When you keep your tank full, you worry less.

Don’t be a hero. Ask for help. Simplify where you can. Keep your emotional reserves clear for the things that actually matter.

Evening Reflection

Celebrate, No Matter What

At the end of the day, reflect — not to judge, but to celebrate.

Did you show up today, even a little? Good. That’s enough. Maybe all you did was go to work and feed yourself. Maybe you wrote a few sentences, or washed the dishes. That’s more than nothing. That’s forward motion.

Now give yourself a reward. Watch a show. Scroll your phone. Call a friend. But do it with the mindset that you earned it.

Feel the satisfaction of a day well spent. Let yourself enjoy the simple joy of closing the day without shame or guilt.
